Local NCS Choose Twigs for their "Social Action Project"

September 25, 2017

As part of their NCS social action project 9 students and their leader had a great day working alongside trainees in the Twigs project at The Emily Jordan Foundation during the last week of August.  The group were a joy to have as volunteers creating fun and laughter among themselves, trainees and staff as well as doing an awesome job stripping, hoe-ing and preparing a pretty sizeable flower bed along with potting plants with trainees.

The National Citizen Service exists to allow year 15-17 year old teenagers to gain experience “helping to create a more engaged, more cohesive and more socially mobile society.”  This year over 300,000 students across the UK took part over 4 weeks during their school summer holidays.  Week 3 was their Social Action week

A social action project requires the students to plan; fundraise; and do something to make a difference.  Their premise is that they have the power to change the world around them.

The students from Stourport High School and The Bewdley School and their leader Maliaka Rose chose The Emily Jordan Foundation.  Their project involved contacting the Foundation, presenting their proposal, which included a fund raising games afternoon and working alongside trainees in the Twigs project.

They raised over £230, which they used to buy two orbital sanding machines for the trainees to use within Wood-Works and they helped the trainees to pot over 300 plants and strip a flowerbed in the sensory garden.

The group were enthusiastic, fun and a real pleasure to have volunteering within the foundation.

Grace Pearse who is the programme coordinator from NCS has said “I am very proud of what the Young People achieved at The Emily Jordan foundation. The Foundation has been very supportive with all of the group and the Young People have really understood what NCS can achieve in their local area. When speaking to the group they thought, “It is an amazing charity to raise money for and what the Foundation does has a really long lasting impact on the local community".
